The Sensing City Traffic project was concluded on 29.2.2016.
The project was a success although the progress was hindered by unpredictable m&a activities causing drastic shifts in the original plan.
At the outset, the project mainly intended to help Finnish companies to build capabilities for capitalizing on smart transportation systems in China, using Nokia as a pilot case company. The plan was to build a working location-based service (LBS) pilot for Nokia in Guangzhou, China, and to use the accumulated knowledge to help other Finnish companies to enter the same field of business in China.
However, shortly after the project started, Nokia sold its Mobile phones, the primary vehicle of the plan, prompting us to revamp the plan to accommodate the remaining relevant HERE/maps business. Unfortunately, not long after the divestment of the mobile phones, Nokia decided to sell HERE/maps business as well, causing also the second most relevant component of the original plan to become unavailable.
While the project navigated these unpredictable changes, it gained control by focusing on developing its in-house LBS technology and later added Nokia’s High Accuracy Indoor Positioning (HAIP) system in its repertoire.
Finally, the project delivered the following outcomes:

– 10 LBS initiatives

In addition, the project facilitated intense international mobility between Finland and China, and thereby significantly deepened the high quality research collaboration between the parties.
